proclaiming the gospel… for the joy of sinners | sunday worship 10:45 am

In the Beginning

Before this New Year began I had decided to again read the Bible through chronologically. I didn’t begin at the beginning in Genesis 1:1 which says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”; but rather I began in John 1 which says: 1 “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

The Bible doesn’t attempt to prove God’s existence…it simply assumes it; In the beginning Godin the beginning was the Word…was God. God is eternal, He possesses endlessness; He’s infinite, ultimate, All Mighty, sovereign reality; He’s just there.

And so…is the Son: He…was was/is God.  In any beginning there ever was…He was therewith God. Genesis tells us God created the heavens and the earth. John tells us that, the Word…made all things.  3 All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made that was made.

My wife “makes” really good things in the kitchen; but she doesn’t “make” like God the Word “makes”; she can only take things that already exist, mix them together, and bake them into something really delicious. But God… the Word…started from scratch; He began history by causing “all things” to come into existence…by His Word (Ps. 33:6).

And…without Him nothing was made…that was made.

So since Jesus created all things…He owns all things; and…He rules over all things; because it’s His. Abraham Kuyper, Dutch Reformed Theologian, once said:  “There’s not one square inch of earth over which Jesus does not say, “Mine, and I rule it”.

This is staggering truth; yet many deny it.

But if it finds lodging in your heart/mind it will enable you to keep your bearings and persevere in joy and speak with hope to others…in the face of natural disasters, moral chaos, hatred/persecution, political upheavals, and disease/sickness/death of our broken world.

Because God the Word also owns and rules over sinners who’ve been rescued from God’s wrath by God’s grace in Christ. And His reassuring word to us is this: God causes all things to work together for good, to those who love God; to those who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). This was God’s purpose…“In the beginning” and it holds…for His glory.  So child of God re-set your thinking and rest in this massive truth.
